Your Child's Learning and Development

When your child starts at the Nursery, they will be allocated a practitioner in their room who will be their key person. The key person builds a close relationship with the child and their carers and monitors and records their development. Each child has a Learning Diary which provides a holistic picture of their learning and development. Their diaries include photographs, observations and examples of their work. Children are encouraged to help with completing their diaries and look back on their achievemnets as this helps to cement their learning. We also invite parents and carers to contribute to the diaries and share information about what their child enjoys and is interested in doing at home. Your child's Learning Diary is available for you to see at any time.

We aim to build a relationship with you as well as your child, so the day to day informal chats with you will enable us to share important information about them and their achievements.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) underpins every thing your child experiences at nursery.

The EYFS has 4 themes:

  • A Unique Child
  • Positive Relationships
  • Enabling Environments
  • Learning & Development

The 6 areas of learning and devlopment are;

  • Communication, Language & Literacy
  • Problem Solving Reasoning & Numeracy
  • Physical Development
  • Creative Development
  • Knowledge Understanding of the World
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We plan carefully, so that activities and experiences relating to each area of learning are provided each day. Some activities are adult led but the majority of the time your child is encouraged to initiate their own play and learning. We then observe their interests and are able to organise the environment to support them in extending their learning.

The children are encouraged to plan, do and review. This means that they are involved in planning which activities they do and reflect on what they have done. In doing this they become more aware of their own learning.

We do not have preconceived expectations about what your child will be able to do when they leave nursery to begin school as all children develop at very different rates, but what we do aim to do is support them in becoming confident learners who are excited and interested to learn and able to cope with problems and difficulties as they arise.
If they have these dispositions they will be far better equipped to learn to their fullest potential.
